Dog Fighting: Portis and Samuels Do Not Think It Is a Crime

Clinton Portis and Chris Samuels are two players from the Washington Redskins. Apparently, these two are defending Michael Vick and believe that dog fighting is not a crime:

‘”…I don’t know if he was fighting dogs or not,” Portis said. “But it’s his property; it’s his dogs. If that’s what he wants to do, do it.”

‘Portis said dog fighting is a “prevalent” part of life.

‘Portis, a native of Laurel, Mississippi, added: “I know a lot of back roads that got a dog fight if you want to go see it. But they’re not bothering those people because those people are not big names. I’m sure there’s some police got some dogs that are fighting them, some judges got dogs and everything else.”‘

Perhaps these two football people would like to justify the means to make these dogs exceedingly aggressive and attack another dog. Being social animals, this is not usual behaviour for dogs. This aggressiveness is induced. It is taught - if you wish to call it ‘teaching.’ By all standards of decency, the aggressiveness is taught by cruel, inhumane means. In simple terms, the dogs are tortured to be aggressive and pack / social instincts to fellow canines are extinguished. - Perhaps some consider this ‘good fun.’ I contend that a majority of people see this as cruelty.

The dog’s bite is powerful enough to crush bones. What do you think happens to the dogs that are hurt? An injured fighting dog is useless, will not make money, is an extra expense, and is shot. There is no visit to the veterinarian. An ethical veterinarian would report the dog fighting. An injured dog is simply shot - end of problem. Perhaps some consider this collateral damage from the ’sport.’ I contend that a majority of people see this as criminal.

Dogs who are successful in these fights are bred with the hope of producing aggressive offspring. More dogs are needed because the ‘career’ of a fighting dog is short. If a pup does not show signs of being aggressive enough or have the potential size / strength necessary, that animal is sold. The person who buys that puppy does not know that he/she is buying a possibly explosive animal because of its genetic background. The pups that do not have the aggressiveness, size, strength or whatever are sold because - after all - it is all about the money. And so problem inventory is sold. Perhaps some consider this free enterprise and being entrepreneurial. I contend that it is immoral and criminal.

Mr. Portis may know many back roads of Mississippi or wherever. I suggest that he and Mr. Samuels take a closer look and see what is involved. Perhaps some consider dog fighting to be sport. I contend that it is revolting and criminal - and I am sure that the Washington Redskins public relations people are now in damage control mode.

Dog fighting is a blood sport. These two NFL players should be put down just like they kill the dogs that are no longer any use to them. We don’t need these type of people in the world.

I once had a beautiful pit bull. He was a big lap dog. One of my neighbors sent his adolescent son over to see if I wanted to have my dog fight his dog. I offered to fight the dad and let the dogs watch, but he never got back to me.

Aside from being hot headed is this artical saying anything? Inhuman is an intresting term how exactly can one be inhumane to a creature which is in fact not human. In fact the term itself seems to denote that humanity is in some way superior reguardless of the idea we are simply base animals ourselves. Has the idea of unbiased journalism flown out the window? Funny how quickly we will put down the beliefs of anouther simply because they do not agree with our own. The viewpoint of these people is as valid as yours. Do not get the idea I agree with them, but to personally attack them because they think differantly is no more right than the supposed crime itself.

Kyrant:
Too bad you’re 9 years old.

Yes, dogs are not human but the idea of being inhuman is how we (humans) act. If we cause pain and suffering to others (no matter what species) we are not being acting in a humane manner. It’s not about what the dogs do, it is what we do as humans.

In response to Kyrant, these people view cruelty to animals, which are totally controlled by and obedient to a supposedly more intelligent species, as normal and acceptable for their entertainment and you think the editorial is just as bad as their beliefs?

I saw no blood shed nor death result from this editorial.

HSUS (Humane Society of US) has been fighting a major campaign against this blood sport involving dogs and other animals and have my support, monetary and otherwise.

People won’t forget the images of 70 scarred, skeletal pit bulls chained on Vick’s property along with dog fighting paraphernalia. Or of actual dog fighting shown on the news after his possible involvement became public. The attitude that everyone should forget for the sake of the NFL is disgusting. It’s this type thinking that allows animal cruelty to continue and comments from Clinton Portis and Chris Samuels to actually come out their mouth this day & age.

Here is a millionaire NFL star, so disgusting & greedy as to allegedly participate & profit off torture and killing innocent animals. I will never forget & if the NFL allows Vick to play if found guilty, the public outcry will be huge.

Get rid of this type of people just as they did the dogs. These have betrayed God’s smallest, helpless puppies and dogs. They will have their just reward. Now…STOP this awful crime. Make these mens careers ruined…send them to jail….give them the worst food and conditions in which to barely survive….
