Desperate times call for desperate measures. - It is no surprise that Dell is struggling with its current marketing plan. The evolution of Dell is the addition of local retailers:
“Dell, the struggling computer maker, on Wednesday outlined plans to reverse two decades of reliance on direct sales by broadening its business model to include third-party vendors and retailers.”

Unfortunately, adding another layer to the marketing plan is not going to decrease costs. Instead, the third party vendors will need to be a factor in the product price points. It is amazing the Dell has not focused on what made them a success. Two of the key factors were: great value and customer service. It may seem ‘old school’ but it still works.
