The customer now has an operating system choice from Dell. “Computer maker Dell has chosen Ubuntu as the operating system for its range of Linux computers for consumers.”
link: Dell to use Ubuntu on Linux PCs
The Dell spokesman says that this is a “direct response to the customer need“. - It seems that Dell and others have taken their time in responding to “the customer need”. Could falling sales have anything to do with finally responding to the customer?

I think Michael Dell has some of the same ’siege’ mentality that Bill Gates is so famous for. At this point, Dell will do just about anything to regain market share. Ubuntu is a good start, as long as support is solid.

Dells with Linux are typically $200.00 less expensive! Run upto 50X faster in all processes! Slowest reported was in the PC Gamer Quake III shoot out, at 5X faster, pushing framerates to the maximum!
Have scores of Dells here, mostly curbside and dustbin donations, running Mepis (Ubuntu plus 1% goodness!).
Immune to the “114,000 Microsoft Virus Malware Definitions”!
Exempt from the Multiple Convicted Felon Pirate Microsoft “Trusted Partner” Protection Racket cartel of nagscreens and trialware!
Friends don’t let friends use any of the vulnerable Microsoft products on the Internet! Microsoft uses Linux for routers, servers, on MS.com, MSN.com, FreeBSD on Hotmail.com…
Speaks volumes for who to trust! Certainly don’t trust a multiple convicted criminal felon!

Linux from Dell seems to be only an option available for users. Apparently Dell isn’t shipping everything with Linux. I just looked at Walmart’s website where Dell was supposed to going retail with and what operating system is listed with Dell’s desktops? Windows Vista. So it sounds like if you want Linux it will have to be so you will have to look for. Many people shopping for a new PC probably don’t even know what Linux is.
