Angers Grows Over the Pet Food Recall

While the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) work to contain the spreading disaster of the tainted pet food problem, there is an interesting disparity to note. Lisa Wade McCormick, in an article for ConsumerAffairs.com, points out that “the USDA will compensate hog farmers affected by the tainted pet food. Owners of pets killed by the tainted pet food, on the other hand, get nothing.”

It is certainly understandable that the hog farmers are compensated for the impact that this has on their livelihood. However, does this set a precedent for pet owners? Some pet owners have had enormous, unexpected veterinary bills - and some have had the terrible sadness over the loss of a cherished pet. There is a growing anger among pet owners and it is only increasing as this problem drags on… endlessly.

There is a press release on PETitionz.org entitled Americans Can Sue in Canada-Better Hope of Justice. The law in Ontario Canada can award damages for emotional trauma when a pet is hurt or killed. Most US states treat a companion animal as property. It is a tiny positve in this ongoing horror. The link to the lawyer’s site is also at PETitionz.org.
