Ongoing Pet Food Recall

  • No Related Post

On one hand, it does not surprise me that the ongoing dog food recall story has had the greatest reader response of any issue with which I have been associated. What does surprise me is the sheer volume of email from people. It has gone far beyond what I can manage to answer with a personal response. It is with good reason that people are angry and frustrated. Something in the food chain is putting their pets at grave risk.

As the recall list grows, the tone of the mail is becoming more helpless and much more angry. These are reputed brands of pet food. Many of these products were in the pet aisle of your local grocery store and some people are raising the question of whether this can happen to the food chain for humans. The recent spinach recall is sited as an example.

If the email that I receive is any indication, this issue will keep legislators and lawyers busy for months to come. People are demanding stricter security to safe guard the food chain. And, of course, the lawsuits have begun to be filed. This will cost the food industry millions and millions of dollars. If this fiasco has caused trips to the veterinarian, please keep your bills and document what is happening with your pet. Your veterinarian may be overwhelmed with work and with calls. There is the possibility that expenses related to this recall and danger may be covered. I realize that is microscopic comfort if your pet is ill … or worse.

I urge you to check your current pet food product as this recall broadens. I am told that this is an “around the clock” crisis situation for the laboratories and for these manufacturers. Meanwhile, there are also those who wonder why so much is being posted on this issue and are from the ‘let’s move on’ camp. To that small segment of the internet, I am not even going to try to explain.

Is Hills prescription R/D for dogs also included on the recall list?
thanks
Sergio

Sergio: Here is a quote from Reuters news for March 31:

“…The Food and Drug Administration said late on Friday it notified Hill’s Pet Nutrition Inc. that tests had detected byproducts of a suspect chemical in the wheat gluten it used to make Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food.”

I would suggest checking the Hill’s site for updates. I hope that helps…

is the pedigree dog food and puppy chow on the recall lists? and also is purina cat chow on the lists?

Mandy,

“Meanwhile, Effem Inc. Canada brands, which includes Pedigree, Cesar dog food, as well as, Whiskas, Sheba and Temptations cat food, said Saturday their products are not included in the recall and are safe for pets to eat.”

As for the Purina products, you might want to check the Purina web site for updates. I hope that helps…

My heart and a prayer to Joe Greene and everyone who had a loving pet suffer! Our family has been sweating this out as well, waiting for the next ’shoe’ to drop.
We use EAGLE PACK brand wet food once a day & the same brand dry. We purchase at a local Feed & Grain store (two of our cats had hairball issues, but rarely with this brand in the “Holistic Select” line.)
We also use WHISKAS treats, which one of the cats prefers over everything else! Every day I check. This is my first visit to this site - Thanks, everyone for sharing!

Has anyone had any problem with Cesar wet or dry food?
My little Poodle got sick eating Alpo, though it’s not on the recall list.

Joan, this is from the Purina site:

“On March 30, 2007, Nestlé Purina PetCare Company announced it is voluntarily recalling all sizes and varieties of its ALPO Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes…”

link: http://www.alpo.com/home.aspx

As you know, Purina makes Alpo. I hope this helps…

Catherine

Thanks, Catherine. I’m still wondering if anyone had any problem with Cesar wet or dry food. Since some foods not on the recall list maybe on it in a day or two, or next week, you just can’t rely on what they’re saying today.

I have two Maltese and they eat Little ceasar wet food is this on the list? I cant find any info
thank you

Denise,

This is a quote from their web site:

“In this time of uncertainty, sadness and confusion, please rest assured that CESAR® Brand foods were NOT part of the recent national pet food recall involving Menu Foods and other companies. Every gourmet entree CESAR® carefully and lovingly creates always was, and still is a completely safe and secure way to not only nourish your pet, but to love them back as well.”

link: http://cesar.com/safety/default.aspx

This information is posted February 20, 2007 - I would suggest checking the site regularly just to keep up to date. This recall just seems endless. The Cesar people are offering a ‘complimentary entree’. I guess their marketing department is working hard.

I hope this helps, Denise… I sent you an email just in case.

We had just celebrated our 1 year anniversary of being cat owners. We had a calico and a tortoise colored one. They were perfectly healthy and then within a month both were dead. A stray cat with a possible retro virus was blamed…because we had to explain it somehow. I had to stop doing tests due to rising vet bills. This happened about 2 weeks before the recall; therefore, we did not test for that. But one of the things was that the smaller of the two cats–the only one that we took to the vet since the calico had wandered off to die–had lungs that were filled with something making it difficult for her to breathe. I haven’t heard of this being a symptom of the tainted food, has anyone? It just seems like such a coincidence for us to loose 2 awesome young full of life cats and then the recall. Our food is not on the list……yet..but it does have wheat gluten from China in it.

I lost my dog after feeding her the alpo cuts with gravy, and I still have cans with number recalled. She was fine one day then kidneys stopped working. barb

We have three beautiful male greyhounds that we adopted from the track in Florida, these guys are like our children to us. One of the three has been contaminated with the chemical in the biscuts, we have him on special NF for kidneys, they all need to be retested at the end of this month, so the on going treatment is still going on. What really makes us angry is when I placed a call about them and was told to prove it. We don’t keep the bags from our treats they are placed in containers to keep them fresh. The person I talked to was not only thoughtless but rude. Our vet offered to write a letter on this for us, he was not happy when I told him what I was told on the phone.
Now I see that the corn gluten has also been contaminated,we were told it was safe, what’s next? I don’t feel there is anything left in any store that is safe for our precious boys, I now give them animal cookies, that our grandkids eat. Hope the foreign countries haven’t contaminated them yet? We are hoping we have caught this in time, but I will say one thing for sure and that is we will not buy anymore dog treats of any kind from any department stores, our other two are on Pro Plan so far it is safe?? The FDA needs to do more than they are doing, this should have never happened in the first place, they need to stop sending our jobs to these foreign countries, how many dogs, cats, humans and now babies will have to die before they actually get something done to stop it, our hearts goes out to all those who have lost their precious pets. Shame on our governments and politicians for allowing our jobs to go to foreign countries to save a BUCK at our expense and to line their own POCKETS. We as American people need to start speaking out, it is only going to get worse if we don’t.

Thank you for your article. I feel exactly the same way as you do. We adopted adult cat and she eats only dry cat food.No any human food. So I am completely dependent on commercial pet food. Every evening I check recall page, afraid that her dry food show up on the list. I was suprised that also rice gluten in cat food was tampered with.So it is not only wheat gluten and not only a one time mistake. You’re right if nothing is done we are the next to be poisoned.
I wish that all these confused people I am meeting in pet sections of supermarkets could read your article.
D. Kocourek

It would help if people would quit buying animal food at these supermarkets, and get it from their vets or animal hospitals. It just might wake up the FDA and let them know we mean business. I’m looking into making my own dog food and biscuits.
Where I live they still are real slow about taking the tainted food off the shelves. And your right it isn’t the first mistake made on animal food or human food or the drugs that they prescribe for people, the FDA knows this and doesn’t care the only thing they care about is how much money they can make first before they pull it off the shelf and say oops, it is causing problems like DEATH in many cases. The government the politicians and the FDA are walking all over the American people and they all lie, so if we do nothing to stop it, it will continue until they have wiped out the majority of us.I’m doing what I have to, to protect my family and our pets. I read everything in the supermarkets and if it is not made in the USA we don’t buy it. We don’t only have to worry about the dog and cat food, we now have the worry of the tainted hogs and chickens, we already know that the cows are loaded with hormones and God only knows what else. AND THEY CALL THIS AMERICA!!

My boxer puppy was healthy until suddenly I found him dead today. He only ate puppy chow and my husband recently started giving him pedigree can food mixed with the puppy chow. Has anyone had any problems with pedigree to your knowledge

Kimberley,

This is taken from the Pedigree web site on the morning of April 30, 2007:

“We would like you to know that PEDIGREE® Food For Dogs is not a part of the recent nationwide pet food recall initiated by Menu Foods and other companies. All of our PEDIGREE® products remain a safe, nutritious and delicious way to feed your best friends.”

link: http://www.pedigree.com/safety/

You may want to check other sources. This fiasco continues. - Kimberley, I am truly sorry to hear about your puppy.

Catherine

My dog a 4 year old mix lab and basenge died in a period of 7 days from eating natural choice nutra lamb and rice a dried dog food. The kidney failure was so acute that it did not have time to crystalize in her renal tubes. All test indicated that she had no kidney problems prior to her death. The food manufacture still has not recalled the dry food even though there have been multiple cases.

Our government is at war with its own taxpayers! Us!!
We elect the greedy politicians into high-paying jobs with great benefits (that you and I cannot get from our jobs), big spending accounts, several travel trips each year for them and a relative at our expense, and 401Ks and fantastic retirement benefits after only 5 years of service to OUR country! This will not change. It will only get worse every year. Haven’t you noticed?? Our politicians do not have to work TWO jobs to support themselves when we are so willing to support them so well. Take a look at the salaries and benefits we pay for.. for our Congress representatives and Senators. And let’s not forget how much we are paying George Bush and his cronies to screw up this country and our international reputation! Shame on us! Unbelievable!! Wake up folks. Next, the people will be dying off from all the foods we bring into this country from all over the world. Good bye to the good life.

My mini Schnauzer was put on Hill’s Science Diet U/D formula and for the last few months he has been very ill. He was put on the wet food and dry food was used as treats. He ended up with a swollen pancreas and a large growth in his abdomen. He had a clean bill of health before he started on this food and now he’s gone. I had to put him to sleep last week. I blame this food! I opened a can that had mold in it. How could this be?

As a follow up to my earlier response dated May 16th has anybody’s dog died from eating Nutras natural Choice Dried dog food. If you have had your dog die or somebodies dog that you know pleswe E mail me at lms076@aol.com thank you Lance Smith

I have used the Pedigree dog food for at least the last 10 years. Last week I purchased a different kind of Pedigree dog food and 4 out of 6 of my dogs became sick with diaherea and vomiting. They ate it for 4 days when I replaced that dog food with their regular Pedigree kind. Today 1 of my dogs died. What should I do? I believe it was the dog food that killed her and others should know about this.

Becky Lindsey

Becky, I am sorry to hear about your food problem and the consequences. The first thing that I would recommend is that you speak to your veterinarian. See what documentation the veterinarian can provide about this problem. The next step might be to see a lawyer - or look into the class action litigation that has been happening as a result of this horrible pet food fiasco. Keep all the dog food for further testing and document, as best you can, what happened.

I have received so many notes from so many dog owners who have has tragic results because of the pet food that they purchased. It is heart-breaking and so maddening.

Catherine Forsythe
