Google Rankings - The Rules of the Road

Can people find your site with a Google search? - The success of your site and all your work may depend upon it. Google offers a “Webmaster Guidelines” page that gives a fairly detailed primer about what should be on the site and what should not be on the site. For example, Google suggests:

“Make pages for users, not for search engines. Don’t deceive your users or present different content to search engines than you display to users, which is commonly referred to as “cloaking.”"

link: Webmaster Guidelines

If you are designing your own site, this is a good reference page. If you are hiring someone for the design, one of the questions that you may want to ask is whether the ‘road rules’, according to Google, have been followed. As it is stated diplomatically on that page, you do not want Google to “respond negatively“.
