The story of Shawn Carpenter has been well documented on the internet and even on this site. Sandia National Laboratories was in court again to try to have a new trial or to have the punitive damages overturned. They were unsuccessful:
“ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - A judge has upheld a $4.3 million verdict against Sandia National Laboratories in the case of a fired cybersecurity analyst who went to federal authorities with information alleging national security breaches.
State District Judge Linda Vanzi on Tuesday denied Sandia’s motion for a new trial or to reduce the punitive damages to zero.”

Undoubtedly, Sandia National Laboratories will continue to contest this matter. However, for the moment, the courts rule in Shawn Carpenter’s favour. And it is vindication.

There are good managers and people at Sandia, but Carpenter’s case shows the dark side of what happens to employees that won’t fall in line. Dissenting opinions are not welcomed, and the academic environment is no more. It’s a corporate mentality, and those who don’t obey are cast aside like trash. Carpenter’s case has destroyed any shred of credibility or faith in Lab leadership that existed. The high expectations for Dr. Hunter have been replaced with apathy, resentment and distrust of management. High performing grad students now look elsewhere, as Sandia and other national laboratories like LANL and Livermore have lost their luster. Disconnected Sandia leaders have squandered our good image and trashed employee morale in record breaking time. Message to the top brass: It’s about the people, you morons. It’s about fairness. It’s about respect, which should flow both ways. It’s about communication. Someone save us, because we obviously can’t save ourselves.
