Mary Masterman is seventeen years old and the winner of the Intel Science Talent Search. This is a stellar achievement, recognized with a hundred thousand dollar ($100,000) scholarship and life long bragging rights. Mary built “an inexpensive yet accurate spectrograph that identifies the “fingerprints” of different molecules.”

Kudos to Mary - I suspect that the science and technology community will hear more from Mary in the years to come.

I would be interested in the specifics of how this was done as smaller police departments’ labs would find this useful. Thanks.

Anyone know if she published the design anywhere? I’m curious as to how simple she made it.

This is an unusual feat, for a girl her age. i hope this inspires others. I desire to see this type of competitions come to the shores of Africa.

Mary is a rising star.
Is she interested in commercializing her design?

Yay Kae!!! you are *my* best friend in the whole world!!! :)
I don’t know if I could commercialize it….mostly it’s just cheaper, it’s not really a new design :)
