NASA Finds Another Use for Duct Tape

I associate NASA with high tech and leading edge gadgetry for space exploration. I did not think that the astronauts would be carrying duct tape with them to outer space:
“It turns out NASA has a detailed set of written procedures for dealing with a suicidal or psychotic astronaut in space. The documents, obtained this week by The Associated Press, say the astronaut’s crewmates should bind his wrists and ankles with duct tape, tie him down with a bungee cord and inject him with tranquilizers if necessary.”

Whoever is writing that book about the million and one uses of duct tape can add another entry.

This was very interesting to me as I am a recent transplant from Titusville, home to many of the NASA people at Cape Canaveral.
Astronauts are different in some respects, they have to be to endure the rigors of space travel. But in some respects, they’re much the same, even with their extensive training and psychological evaluations. Would you say that someone’s dropped the ball big-time here?
It will be interesting to see how this case proceeds, my perception is that the coverage seems to be a little kid-glove. I’m wondering how the press would have handled this if the perpetrator had been a man, my guess is that his body would still be hanging from a lamp-post. We’ll see.
