Upcoming MacBook: Intel Not Inside

Remember when Apple bought out P.A. Semi? Well, they had a reason to. I reported a few days ago about the reoccurring rumors on the Web about Apple’s plan to update their MacBook line. What I didn’t mention: their is a possibility that Apple will be making their own chipset, and are not going to use Intel’s Montevina chip for the new MacBook. Sorry Intel, you lucked out.
So does this mean Intel is out of business? Absolutely not. It’s still the #1 leading chip manufacturer. But this is definitely not the first time a major corporation has said that they didn’t like Montevina:
Microsoft was less-than-thrilled about the performance of the chipsets (Montevina) that were scheduled to arrive with Windows Vista, and Intel has had problems getting other chipsets to live up to their promise.
- Factoids:
- “P.A. Semi was originally for Apple’s iPod Touch & iPhone”, as stated by Steve Jobs.
- Apple’s upcoming MacBook might feature touch-screen options.
- I am almost certain that the new MacBooks will acquire an aluminum casing.

Although Apple may start using their own chipset, that doesn’t mean they will stop using Intel CPUs.

I don’t believe Apple will do this now that Snow Leopard is going to be 64-bit Intel-Only..

I wonder what that would mean for the booming OSX86 group?
