The 1 Social Network To Rule Them All
No, I am not about to tell you about a new site that will supposedly be the Da Vinci of social networks, but I am pleading out to software/web designers or anyone with a bit of pity for people like me who need a single social network, one to rule them all.
It is a major hassle when it comes to managing multiple social networking accounts, and FriendFeed is the only one that imports updates from my Twitter, Identi.ca, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, etc… That is why I like FriendFeed the most! I can’t really say it’s FriendFeed’s fault for not allowing me to import my FF feed to Twitter, because the people at Twitter won’t allow that option (which ain’t that smart). Nor do any other social networks either (to my knowledge). But FriendFeed has its faults; read bellow as I point out the faults with the social networks that I use:
- Facebook: I liked Facebook. When I first joined Facebook a year ago, I was not flooded with masses of spam, invitations, requests and so on. But now, I am: Facebook gave me such a bad taste in my mouth that I spat it down to the bowels of hell. I only check my Facebook once a month now to see if any school friends are trying to get in touch with me.
- Myspace: Ugh… I hate Myspace. I had it for 15 minutes and shut my account down. Debate with me all you want, Myspace is a horrid piece of the internet. With all other possible social networks to choose from, why Myspace?!?
- Twitter: Twitter is amazing! Or was up until FriendFeed came along. The only reason I am still on Twitter is because I was an early adopter, along with many… And now everyone is on it. It would be plain stupid to leave.
- Identi.ca: I joined Identi.ca after Chris Pirillo joined. Up until now, the only people of tech importance were Chris himself and Bwana. Plus the site looks like a counterfeit version of Twitter.
- FriendFeed: It’s the best, so far. I love the feature of being able to import (as mention above) from almost any site (including of course other social networks). But the only problem I have with FriendFeed is optimizing my accounts on other sites to play nice with it. I have had setup issues from RSS feeds, my Flickr account, Google Talk… the list goes on. But, it’s the one that works OK for me.
Those are the ones that I use the most. Here is what I thinks needs to be done:
- No spam!
- Integration with multiple social networks.
- Better search features! People find me, but when I search for them, they never show up!
- Social networks teaming up with social networks.
- Advanced privacy features.
- Better feedback support.
- And if you are going to start a social networking site, be original, not a copy cat ;)
We probably will never see an “all-in-one” social network: one that could do everything and anything we asked for. So, we are going to have to live with multiple ones until the end of days (hopefully coming soon, I really want to use a single social network)! Oh wait a sec… don’t I have a Ping.fm account ;) ? Feel free to comment.

You’re right. The fact is “social network” really means lots of conversations in a lot of places. Social networks also encompass conversations I have with with my inner circle, my extended circle and random people out on the web. These conversations occur around anything, content, email, twitter, etc. I’ve got my http://www.facebook.com conversations, linked in for my professional conversations, http://www.qlubb.com for my kid’s playgroups and my soccer team, my yahoogroup on cycling, my followers on twitter for a little randomness. Friendfeed is fast becoming a good piece of infrastructure to help consolidate all of this stuff. It’s never going to be one social network destination because the conversations are everywhere.

Considering that there are now so many social networks catering to such a wide range of niches, my biggest problem is finding ones relevant to me and related to my specific interests or product niches. Google seems to be inefficient and returns alot of irrelevant results. A good resource that I use to find them is this search engine for social networking sites.
