Vimeo Bans All Video Game Clips

Vimeo is no longer allowing its users to add “video game” related content, according to one of their blog posts. They claim that the amount of videos on their site that are inspired by games like Halo 3, Counterstrike, Medal of Honor and countless others show no “creativity” what so ever. They also share concern for the length of the videos, stating that they are one of the longest types of videos on the site, which could lead to hosting problems. But even these reasons are not enough for the countless number of gamers on Vimeo:

“LEAVE MY HALO 3 WALKTHROUGH ALONE!!! LEAVE IT ALONE!!!” - Halo 3 noobs on Vimeo.

Ok, that wasn’t really what they said in response to these sanctions on the site, but I can tell you that they are not happy at all. And I must agree with them. Anything on the web is creative, no matter how long it is or what tools you used to develop it. By doing this, they are not letting their community have the right to show what they can do with a video camera. Here is what else it says on the Vimeo blog:

This decision was not easy, and there was much debate internally; however, we feel this decision will benefit Vimeo in the long run and better benefit the video makers it was created for. Our resources are limited and they must be channeled towards maintaining our goals.

They also say that “Machinima content” will still be allowed on the site (thought, I do believe many users will try to pose as Machinima content uploaders). So technically, uploading this would be alright:

Anyway, let’s hope this won’t hurt Vimeo. Let’s hope Vimeo might retract this rulling. Feel free to comment.

The problem is a lot of the videos they are taking down have a lot more creative expression than two squirrels having sex ( a popular video one of the vimeo staff uploaded).

The EA Skate. community is outraged at the fact that our videos that take months of editing and a lot of thought and creativity are being removed alongside videos of someone simply playing a game.

The vimeo staff has been nothing but rude to a large portion of their userbase.

So we react:

I’m all with you guys! Start the rebellion against this ruling!

Good Luck!
