I love my MacBook! It does its purpose extremely well (web browsing, email and the occasional venture to Chris.Pirillo.com)! The only problems I have ever had with it was long ago when installing Parallels Desktop (seeing that my version was pirated) and sending it in for a single dead pixel (I abuse warranty to the max, but hell, I paid for it). But, as laptops tend to do, it is starting to fall apart even more…
:(
1. My battery bay will not open (caused by Future Shop improperly installing 2GB of RAM on my Mac).
2. When they were forcing the battery (which now won’t open) to close, after jamming the RAM inside, they chipped the side edges of the MacBook casing (not the battery).
3. My MacBook paneling is chipping off.

Looks bad, but I have a 3 year warranty with Future Shop! These guys are only 2nd to Rogers on my list of the most hated companies in the Canada (coming soon to Lockergnome)! Here’s my story with having to get them to fix my damages:
- I head to Future Shop on Tuesday to get my MacBook repaired.
- I walk into the store, head to the IT section.
- I get to talk to a tech guy who obviously woke up on the wrong side of the bed that morning.
- I explain to the guy that the panel chipping is a defect with the MacBook.
- He doesn’t believe me till his manager tells him that it is, good job bud.
Just to clarify one thing before I go on: The day the RAM was installed was on December 26th, 2007… Boxing Day. On that day, I think I got the best customer service from them: Even though they did a crap job at installing the RAM, they forgot to charge me for the installation and gave me no receipts (I ran out of there… ran and never looked back). Now back to the story:
- The Future Nerd is telling me that both the battery bay problem & the chipping near the battery is not their fault.
- He then told me that they have never done a in store installation on Boxing Day… EVAR!!! (His manager, for the 2nd time, comes and tells him that they actually do, HAHA!).
- Finally, when telling the guy that I never received a bill or paper for the installation, he called me a straight out lier.
- Then, I tried to reiterate to him that the quality of the workmanship done on the MacBook during the installation was horrid, and in doing so, I used the word “shit” (and I shouldn’t have).
- He no longer wanted to serve me and reprimanded me on my vocabulary.
- Finally, I ask to deal with the manager.
- He tells us to come back latter so that I don’t lose and of my data (I forgot to back-up some files :P)
I head home and after dinner set off to the Future Morons:
- Instead of getting the same guy to help me, I ask for someone else.
- To my luck, an inexperienced, untainted and unprofessional clerk is ready to help!
- I am very nice with him and in return he mistakenly adds both the battery bay and the accidental chip to the list of items to fix while they ship my MacBook off :
:)
- I made sure that he photo copied the invoice so I can be sure to show them it if they do not fix either of the problems.
This is another reason why I am happy that Apple is opening a flagship store here in Montreal! This way, I can deal directly with people that don’t have double digit IQs nor triple digit incomes (sounds like the average Future Shop employee).
