Former Hewlett Packard Vice President Gets Owned For IBM Theft

It looks like someone in the tech world could be facing jail time for slipping IBM’s trade secrets to HP. And that person is Atul Malhotra, who worked for IBM in the Global Services division until April of 2006, and then went to work for Hewlett Packard as a VP for Imaging and Printing services (fired in September of that year). Mr. Malhotra pleaded guilty in court yesterday. And he better have. Why? Well, during his time at IBM, he gained privileged information; apparently a detailed document pertaining to CC Calibration Metrics (a very confidential internal pricing file). In July of 06′, only 2 months after he became a hot-shot at HP, he let a Senior VP in on IBM’s trick’s of the trade by sending an email with the subject titled as “For Your Eyes Only - confidential” (attached was the “CC Calibration Metrics” file). Two days after, he did the same thing again, forwarding the exact same message to another Senior Vice President. If only he knew (and trust me, he did) that each and every page of the attached documents said “PROPERTY OF IBM - CONFIDENTIAL” on it. So what’s the damage? Just look at this from the court papers:
Oh snap! Well, goes to show that you shouldn’t send things that say “CONFIDENTIAL” on them to people that don’t have the right to read it. So Uncle Sam ain’t happy, and as you can see at the top of this story, will be going after the soon to be convicted felon.

Court file is here.
