Simple Measuring Tips For Installing Window Blinds

Today, tips for measuring your windows for blinds:

1.) Only use a steel measuring tape. Never use a piece of string, ribbon or a cloth tape - they will not give you an accurate measurement because each of them depend on how tightly you pull them when measuring.

2.) Measure your windows to the nearest 1/8″ of an inch. For an inside mount, measure tightly from inside window casing to inside window casing. Measure the width and the height in 2 or 3 places, because most windows are not perfectly square. Clearly label the width and the height on your notes. This will eliminate guess work when you go to purchase your blinds. Also if you writing out the measurements the width goes before the height. For example 47 1/8″ W x 56 3/4″ H, this will help the sales person working with you, and will help any ordering mistakes from transposed numbers. Don’t forget to measure the depth of your window, if you have shallow depth you may have to change the style of blinds you were looking at, or mount them on the outside of the frame.

3.) If you are mounting your window blind on the outside of the window frame. Figure out how much room you have to work with, while measuring the windows. Generally speaking adding 3″ to each side of the width (6″ total) will allow you to still maintain your privacy. On the height you don’t need quite as much space, 3″ total should do the trick. Don’t forget to measure the entire area the blind will be covering, instead of just the inside dimensions to make sure you have that much space to work with prior to purchasing your blind.

Follow these simple measuring tips for installing window blinds and you will already be ahead of the curve in avoiding any unneeded frustration of hassle with your next blind purchase.
