Choosing The Best Carpet Pad

Trying to choose the best carpet pad? Generally Berber and looped carpet respond well to a thinner, denser pad. While plushes and textures do well with thicker carpet pad. There is only one carpet pad that is recommended for both carpet types. If you want the best carpet pad for your money and you plan on having your carpet for 10 plus years, I’d suggest Frothed Polyurethane pad. These pads are best described as a “memory foam”. When it’s squeezed or stepped on it will actually bounce back. Many Frothed Polyurethane pads are also eco friendly. Some are a “bio-based blend w/frothed polyurethane, soy bean technology and natural components”. This blend is certified indoor air quality by GreenGuard Environmental Institute. Which is perfect if you suffer from allergies and asthma. The pad is antimicrobial, won’t mold, mildew or keep odors. Plus it’s earth friendly: it is recyclable and made w/zero landfill processes.

Frothed Polyurethane has a 10lb/cu ft density. It 3/8″ thick and is one of the only carpet pads warrantied for radiant heat floors. It’s a breathable moisture barrier with long lasting durability: will never bottom out. The visco elastic memory foam protects your carpet face and extends carpet life. It feels good to walk on, and unlike regular carpet pad will help your carpet bounce back from those indents when you move furniture.

It is worth noting that this is one of the most expensive carpet pads on the market as it is approximately $.83 sf (square foot). So it’s certainly not for everyone. If you are looking for a less expensive pad go with one that is the right style for your carpet. As I stated previously, Berber and looped carpet respond well to thinner, denser pad. While plushes and textures do well with thicker pad. So if you have kids and pets, go with an upgrade on the basic pad, that has a rubber backing, this will better protect your subfloor from spills and it’s priced around $.59 sf. In the end, it all comes down to a balance between cost and comfort. Best padding for the best carpet!
