Today, we have the following question for the Flooring Diva:

Should I upgrade the pad under my laminate floor? The salesperson said it was called silent step or something like that? It seemed like he just wanted to make more money off of me.

Yes, it is a big jump in cost. Basic underlayment for laminate flooring costs around $.25 Square Foot and the upgrade costs almost $.70 SF. It is almost three times the price, but it’s worth it. The basic pad does all right and it will fulfill the manufacturer’s warranty. But it does have some drawbacks.

1. It sounds hollow, whereas the upgrade makes your floor sound like real wood. And it will help deaden any sounds that come across it. If the laminate flooring is going on an upstairs level, you will want to upgrade. Especially if you have little ones or pets running around. If you don’t upgrade the sound will be louder and anyone downstairs will hear every step of it. Trust me on this one, I know first hand what a floor w/basic pad sounds like. And if you have the extra funds, it’s well worth it to UPGRADE on this one.
2. Because it is not a high density foam it will crush and break down in time, leaving your laminate flooring with areas that are not properly protected. This happens a lot in high traffic areas, The upgraded pad is denser and will not break down overtime. Let’s be honest, when it comes to the support of any product, whether that be laminate underlayment, carpet pad or even running shoes - you get what you pay for. And when it comes to something that protects such an important investment, spend the extra money. Your floor will thank you later. And it will show it’s gratitude by lasting longer and sounding more authentic.
