Today, Lisa asks:
Hi. I have Hunter Douglas Duette Honeycomb shades, and they are two years old. One of the cords is quite dirty (I live on a busy street in New York City, and dirt comes in that window). The shade itself I have dusted and it looks fine, but the cord needs to be cleaned. What do you recommend?
Thanks very much!
Lisa, I don’t have much experience cleaning the cords on honeycomb shades, so I went straight to the source and made a phone call to Hunter Douglas. Unfortunately there aren’t very many options for cleaning cords for the honeycomb shades. The Rep did suggest starting with a dry dust cloth or canned air, and if that didn’t work using a very mild, luke warm soap and water mixture to clean the cords. She suggested a mild detergent like Ivory and very gentle scrubbing. If none of this works you only have 2 other options:
- Have Hunter Douglas send you new strings and restring your shade.
- Pay $41 to have Hunter Douglas restring the blind for you.
Both of these will work as short term solutions only. They will not help keep the cords from getting dusty. If the solution of warm water and detergent doesn’t fully clean your cords, I’d suggest getting the new cords and then trying to stay on top of the dust by cleaning regularly.
