Amazon Surprised By Expected Windows 7 Sell Out

Amazon UK confirmed this morning they have completely sold out of their allocation of pre-order stock for Home Premium and Professional editions of Windows 7 inside 24 hours.

A customer services rep said, in classic contradictory terms, that popular demand expected by the company led to a surprise sellout (not sure how you can be surprised by something you expect to happen).

Here’s the statement:

Regarding the item “Windows 7 Home Premium”, Windows 7 is a much awaited product and as we expected it has been a surprise sellout.

Due to high demand we have run out of our initial allocation of Windows 7 promotional items so the buy box for this products is temporarily unavailable and and I can’t guarantee if or when it will be available for pre-order.

Although “Microsoft Windows 7 Home” is not currently in stock at our supplier, we are in the process of securing more stock from them. We will be happy to notify you when it becomes available for ordering.

Just don’t be surprised if the notification email you are not expecting fails to arrive.

Vista has gotten such a bad reputation that a lot of folks want to leave it behind. Even those buying new PC’s, w/o any tech know-how, have a very real hesitance to having Vista. They have no idea why it actually has the rep it has, but they still want to stay away.

To me, Vista is fine. The trouble it has re: lack of driver support for older machines was probably the biggest thing against it. Add in the steep hardware requirements and it spelled disaster (even beyond the fact many older programs refused to run/install).

Hopefully, Windows 7 will be more streamlined and MS will have used what has been complained of in Vista to release a better OS…one can only hope.

I would take such comments with a pinch of salt. Companies typically use the “scarcity tactic” to create a sense of urgency in potential buyers.

All purchases should be evaluated according to the need they fill and the cost of obtaining that benefit. So, it you don’t need it, then it doesn’t matter if they “sell out;” and it also doesn’t matter how much you’ll save by buying it now. ;)

Cheers, Bruce
