Apple rolls out Safari 4.0.2; requires reboot?

Apple has rolled out important updates to its Safari web browser today across multiple platforms.

Version 4.0.2 addresses a couple of nasty security flaws in Apple’s semi-popular browser:

  1. An issue in WebKit’s handling of the parent and top objects may result in a cross-site scripting attack when visiting a maliciously crafted website. This update addresses the issue through improved handling of parent and top objects.
  2. A memory corruption issue exists in WebKit’s handling of numeric character references. Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue through improved handling of numeric character references. Credit to Chris Evans for reporting this issue.

The software update also promises to further improve Javascript performance on both Windows and Mac OS X platforms.

One personal annoyance: the update apparently requires a computer restart on OS X. No idea why, but software update will only proceed with installation if I agree to let my MacBook Pro reboot. Bah.

OS X requires a restart because it’s updating the WebKit system-wide as programs such as Mail rely on the WebKit and need to be updated at the core.

@Martin.

Hell I’m relieved to hear that - I was afraid they’d hired some M$ programmers…

Rebooting for a browser update is very annoying and reminds me Windows of course…

Updating webkit is not an answer, Safari 3 also use webkit but no reboot was required.
There is perhaps a good reason underlying (security issue or so on), but it bother me.

I feel like with 10.5 more and more updates requires reboot, it’s annoying. I remember 10.3 for example that do not require any reboot, except for OS hitself updates…

Rebooting is a waste of time, ans imagine at my office with 10 computers to reboot only for the browser.
