No BlackBerry? Your Cellphone May Do the Trick

A message for those of you with no iPhone or BlackBerry: Your cellphone is smarter than you think.

In fact, your boring old cellphone has enormous potential. Here is a guide to checking your email, looking up information and updating your calendar, just by sending text messages. You can use any cellphone, but you’ll need a generous text-messaging plan.

Good tip, however, the “TeleFlip” service is uneeded. With ATT anyway, there is a free program you can download to your phone called “Mobile Email”. You can access your email without using text. Also, the article tells you to send a text to “Google” (466453), this is incorrect. To text google send the name of the place you are looking for to “Googl” (Without the E).
Other tips include free information by calling 1-800-FREE411, Dial 1-866-FRUCALL to get current prices on an item you see in a store, and others. I have a recent post with free things to do with your cell phone. Check it out.

Yeah. I used TeleFlip for a short time. Unimpressed. I didn’t catch the “google” error, either, even though I use googl all the time.

One of the most useful tricks with SMS — if you have unlimited — is using Google Calendar to set alarms, as mentioned. What wasn’t mentioned is the ability to set multiple alarms via text for phones that lack a repeating alarm feature (like my N75 — go figure). I have my morning wake-ups set that way: 0540 on weekdays and 0800 on Sat & Sun.

Another writer bragged about ATT’s mail client. Frankly, I think it sucks. I unlocked my Nokia and updated to the OEM firmware, then used their excellent browser and Google’s Gmail download. Works better than the ATT software, and takes up less space.
