High Dynamic Range photography is the rage. You use a tripod, and expose the same scene at least 3 times: once normally, once for the highlights, and once for the shadows. Combining them creates an image with detail in all areas.
Obviously, this lends itself better to landscapes than to sports photography. It used to be a complicated process. Photomatix makes it much easier, if you’d like to try it. The trial version is free, and remains active permanently. $99 brings extra features. Also available for Mac.
