I was in grade school when the Soviets launched the first artificial satellite in 1957. In those days the sky was dark enough that we were able to step outside at the announced times and watch “Sputnik” pass overhead, the Sovs having thoughtfully published the orbital schedule to desplay their scientific prowess. The glint in the sky and the beeps of its two radio transmitters literally changed history.
