Steve Bass, over at PC World, did some research into opting out of all those free credit card offers and other kinds of solicitation that have become such a part of everyday life.  These pose a very real threat to the security of your identity, credit rating, bank account and peace of mind, but if you’re willing to put a bit of effort into it, you can reduce the quantity of that kind of garbage by significant amounts.  Steve’s article points you in the right direction.
