5 Things I want in OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

Having switched completely to the Mac a few months ago I am patiently awaiting the next major release of the Mac operating OS X 10.6 aka Snow Leopard. While I am excited for features like Grand Central, Quicktime X, and full 64-bit support there a few things that I would like to see added. Here are a few things that I would like to see in the next release of Mac OS X.

  1. Small UI tweaks- I loved the look of OS X 10.4 but for me 10.5 just looks ugly. From the once transparent menu bar to the 3D dock I am not a huge fan of the new interface. While I know Snow Leopard will put “innovation on pause” I would like to see a little bit more unified interface. Maybe the support of themes is the answer or not, I just want to see OS X look stunning again.
  2. Fix Cover Flow- Cover Flow is a great idea and visually is looks great, but for me its useless. Looking through folders or trying to find files that are not visually different, Pages documents or folders, also Cover Flow can be slow at times when loading the icons.
  3. Time Machine- An update for Time Machine would be welcomed in Snow Leopard. While I can’t complain about the current version of Time Machine there a few things that I would change. For starters I would like a way to change the current interface. While I like the whole space theme like Cover Flow its too slow at times. I wish Apple would use the “simple is more” approach when it comes to things like this.
  4. Spotlight- Two years ago Spotlight was great, but today it feels like its stuck in the past. I hate the way search results are displayed and searching for a single file can be frustrating if you don’t know the exact name. I am not sure how to correct this but I am sure Apple is working on it.
  5. The Dock- As I said before I am not happy with the new Dock. While I was never a huge fan of the Dock before now it just feels out of place. Recently I have switched over to Quicksilver for my application launching but I have not completely given up on the Dock. I wish Apple would implement away for an application stack to work correctly. I am not suggesting a “start menu” I would still like for me to be able to open any app from the dock without it covering my entire screen.
There you go, the top 5 things I would like to see done in Snow Leopard. Now I ask you, the reader, what do you want to see added to the next release of OS X?

I hope its not a flop like Vista…. Sorry guess to even compare it to Vista but i just hope Snow Lep is not a flop!!!!

Wow! What are you talking about. Dude you must be stuck in the past. The dock is great, time machines interface is awesome and spotlight could’nt be any better.I agree with you on the transparent menu though. Overall Leopard’s interface is definitely a step into the future. If you like that you switched to mac, then switchback to lame’ol PC!

I would like see something like Windows 7’s Problem Steps Recorder. Jing is awesome for a free screencast tool, but having something built in would be nice, too.

I don’t “hate” the dock I just want a better experience. I absolutely hate the start menu in Windows so there is no way I am switching back anytime soon. I just think the dock gets in the way a little bit when magnification is turned on.

I just hope they had a little bit for functionality to the Dock, stacks was a great addition and I hope they add to it.

As far as the look of OS X Leopard I like it but I guess I miss the old aqua theme that made me fall in love with Macs in the first place.

I think it should have a screen recording software integrated into it, more compatibility in the mail app and iChat, I honestly can’t think of anything else to fix on Leopard, (maybe I just love my Mac so much, It’s blinding me from its defects lol)

OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard boots up in 0.2 sec flat.

the dock is nice a app launch but not a task manager. It’s a terrible task manager… currently. I’m really surprised how Windows7 has takes some of the better parts of the dock, and put them in the taskbar.

I have had my mac for just over a year now, and am really impressed. The only thing i would really like to see is the ability to write on NTFS formats. Other than that i love it!!!

I agree on the Dock and Spotlight. If I’m not mistaken, the only time I use the Dock these days is when I drag things to an app. And that’s only if it’s to the app icon, if it’s to a specific window in an app, then I Cmd+Tab to that app while dragging. As far as launching apps, that’s been through Quicksilver for years.

For Spotlight, I find I use it less and less often. Most of the time I use it, it is if I’m looking for a specific file and I do know part of its name. But the number of results it often returns is quite overwhelming. Maybe a way to figure which documents are more likely to be the ones I’m looking for? Files in ~/Documents should be rated way higher than documents in /usr/local/src/ or something…
