Video proof that you can download iPhone apps from the Internet

Gabe Jacobs from Gabejacobsblog.com today found proof that you can install apps to iTunes 7.7 from the Internet and not from the App Store. In the video he downloads Neverball from a webpage and then precedes to drag and drop the program into iTunes. iTunes recognizes the file type and adds it as an iPhone/iPod Touch application. So like with music and movies it copies the files to a folder in the iTunes folder called “Mobile Applications”.

In theory this means that you could download 3rd party apps from the Internet without getting them from the App Store. So this could mean the end of needing to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch.

this doesn’t necessarily mean it will sync.

remember, all apps are digitally signed, which is why that developers had to wait until they got their dev certificates before they could do anything.

Also, Apple allows you enterprise and classrooms to distribute apps, but they will only install on specified iphones, not for general distribution.
