iPhone Gaming, why it is important

I cannot wait until July 11. I have this date marked in my calendar for a while now and with each passing day I grow a little mad and a little happier, why you ask? Well everyone in the blogosphere and the tech world knows that July 11 is the day the 3G iPhone and the new firmware launches, thus meaning the App Store. The App Store will be the medium in which new and exciting applications for the iPhone and the iPod Touch will be delivered, what this also means that there will be games available as well.

Of course the iPhone has its limitations, no buttons, no removable media, no track record, but despite these things I am super excited about the platform. For starters the game companies seem to be committed to making games for the new platform. Its always a good thing to have Sega and EA on board from the launch but the most important thing to remember is that indie game developers will be given the same chance as the big boys when it comes to making games.

The iPhone SDK allows you, me, the Pope, Cliffy B., anyone with a Mac to make games on the system. This is almost unheard off on most console systems and you dont see too many indie games being sold in stores for the DS or PSP. This freedom will allow many more companies to embrace the platform and build games for it.

Now its all great and dandy that anyone can make games for the system but how can they make sure that people see the games? The App Store is the place where all iPhone apps will stored. This means that the guy down the street who made a game in two weeks will have his product in the same location as say Spore or Super Monkey Ball. So basically the App Store is the holder of every game made for the iPhone, sounds easier then finding games for Windows right? Another plus is that the games will not be on a physical medium. This means no more having to drive to the store for the newest games, its already there in the App Store.

I hope the companies are polshing up their games as we speek because on July 11 I will be reviewing every app and game I can get. Time will tell if the iPhone will be a true gaming platform, but for now we can only wait.

So are you excited about gaming on the iPhone?
