iPod Touch January Update to be included for free in new 2.0 Firmware

A couple of readers who own iPod touches got in touch to ask how they might obtain the $20 upgrade that adds the Stocks, Mail, Maps, Weather, and Notes applications. The answer is, you can’t. Apple has pulled this upgrade in anticipation of the iPod touch 2.0 software upgrade—due to be released July 11th—that will include these applications along with the new 2.0 features. Better yet, it will cost half the price—just $10 for the upgrade.
This is great news for us early iPod Touch adapters who have yet to buy the January Update. As you can see according to Macworld the January Update will be included with the new 2.0 firmware for only $10. This is in contrast when I predicted that these apps would cost additional money from the AppStore. So for those of you who bought the January Update it will cost you $30 all together to get the same thing for free foe some users or just $10 for others like myself. Personally I think this is one of Apple’s worst blunders in the past couple of years. They are punishing us, the users, for adopting something early and forcing us to pay for updates. While I understand the pricing of these apps it makes no sense for some people to have to pay $30 for all the new updates. Of course I am not complaining because I will only have to pay $10.
Are you an iPod Touch owner? Made about all the money being spent on updates? Let us know via a comment.

So my question to you is… are you getting an iPhone 3G like you said last month or are you upgrading your iPod Touch to 2.0?

Unfortunately I cannot afford the new iPhone. I was going to go prepaid but they did away with it. And with me going off to college, room and board is going to kill me plus student loans. So for now I will be stuck with the Touch.
One day I will have that iPhone
thanks for commenting!

Why won’t apple let the 2.0 be free to customers who bought the january update? that cost me $20, while just giving it away for free for $10.. that is so totally unfair!!

I too have been ripped off by Apple, I bought the update for the Ipod touch in january for £12 and now they’re giving the January update free with Version 2 upgrade for £6.00. I don’t mined paying for upgrades but I don’t like being charged more for the same thing.

I called Apple tech support on this very issue and do you know what they told me? And I qoute…
“Yeah? You paid $30 total for you we’re giving away for $10?
Well, there’s a sucker born every minute. CLICK.”
Unfortunately for Apple, I’m the News Director at CityTV and I recorded the conversation. Hope they enjoy the exposure that THIS brings.

i agree that this update thing is totally bullshit. i bought the bullet in january by buying the update purely for the mail and map functions. yea, it was a good update, but come on, i just got the damn touch in december and now have to pay 20 more for an update? bullshit. and now to be fair to us early adopters/constantly updating users, apple makes us pay an extra 10, while new touch users and iphone users are getting it for free. i love the touch, but this is bullshit. i hope they stop nickel and diming us. shady.

yeah i got all these free apps before i went out to buy an itunes card. i was so ready to upload them on my itouch to see that none of my apps got on. then i go to updates and it says i have to pay $10. i think apple is ripping us off. usually, ipod updates were free when i had a video so i was pretty mad. but oh well, i guess $10 isnt THAT bad but i dont think we should have to pay anything extra at all. i really think they should’ve thought this through before making people pay more.

I was mad about it. I didn’t pay for the update and was able to jailbreak my iPod so I could have the wiggle feature and get rid of some those icons I don’t use. I had 1.1.4 up until a few days ago when I found out I could download the 2.x firmware elsewhere and put it on my iPod, so I did. I now have access to the app store. That may have been wrong, but now that I have access to the app store I bought a lot of apps so it all evens out.
