Will the Linux community back Android? Will Google let us?

I am a Linux enthusiast who enjoys playing around with the open-source operating system from time to time but for the time being it is no where ready to be my primary OS. What makes Linux great to me is that there is a bond and sense of involvement between its users and a sense of openness. With this interaction fixes and patches are made for the OS on a daily basis making better with each passing second.
By now I am sure most of you have heard of Android. In case you haven’t its going to be a free operating system built for cellular phones by Goolge and already has many developers developing applications for the open hand set OS. Being that Android is open-source it falls into the same category as Linux, but will Android have the same following?
Will Google allow the Android users to make these fixes and be able to distribute them with the community? Or will it be closed off and only the higher ups can release updates? Will the users get as involved as they have with their desktop OS?
Me personally I hope that Android is fully open to its users. The Linux community is the best in the world and truly amaze with some of their work. Imagine having a problem with your phone and actually being able to fix it without paying the phone company to do it for you. I am sure the phone companies are going to have a different view on letting their customers alter the OS, but theres always unlocked phones.
Heres to hoping Google lets us the users take full control of Android when its released in the near future.
