Moving to Kubuntu when version 8.04 ships

Recently I have been using the KDE4 desktop within Ubuntu and it has just blown me away with its ease of use and its eye candy. With its easy to use “start menu”, very nice widgets layer and all of the little effects that make it shine over the Gnome desktop that is present in regular Ubuntu. I have made note that I hate the color scheme of Ubuntu and the file management of the Gnome desktop. I honestly believe that Kubuntu should be targeted more to the new user of Linux than Ubuntu because of its ease of use and its graphics.

Here are a few things that are making me “switch” to the KDE environment.

  • You get a nice file preview within folders and reminds me of the file management in OS X and Vista.
  • A very nice clean look that has great colors and really stands out, its not bland and boring like the default Gnome look.
  • The widgets are awesome! I love to use them and they make sense like within OS X, and not like the gadgets in Vista.
  • The menu is nice and simple and a huge step forward over version 3.5

As Kubuntu 8.04 and the KDE 4.0 desktop gets more stable I will be moving completly to it away from Gnome, and I got to say I am a little excited. Finally I have found a good looking Linux distro.

Xfce4 matches my workflow better than KDE4 and is less taxing on the video and ram

I totally agree. I have five computers at home and have played ping pong between Windows and Linux. Vista is pretty but a waste of time. XP is solid, but aging. OSX is well… OSX proprietary and artsy but not a geek’s system. (I pride myself on being a Geek!)

Ubuntu is just too brown. Gutsy was a step backwards from Feisty. Linux Mint couldnt run on ANY computer I had. GOS made Linux Mint seem reliable. XUBUNTU is good, solid, reliable, but lacking things. Not at all pretty. What is wrong with a bit of PIZAZZ? Huh?

Enter Kubuntu. Not flashy in its Gutsy variant but install Hardy and POW! BANG! POOF! BIF! ( I was a big Batm,an fan in the 1960’s) and we have the best LINUX desktop version ever. Lots of apps. Elegance of KDE4. Stability of UBUNTU. Easy to use. Fun to learn.

KUBUNTU 8.04 in beta is a real WINNER! All 5 of our household computers will go that way. Now if only WINE could run Photoshop CS3 I wouldnt even have to virtualize Windows any more.

You can change the gnome theme you know… but my first impressions of kde 4 were good, but it was still a bit unstable for me, I kept getting copies of my task bar widgets at the top of my screen for some reason. I’m trying out the new Hardy kubuntu, hoping that its more stable than gutsy (konqueror always crashed on me, a shame considering it’s my favorite browser). As for Xfce, it has one thing that I really like and i think that kde has already implemented in kwin, is a built in compositor. I never have liked compiz fusion much. It;s too flashy, but the xfwm compositor give you the simple option to make certain parts of the window transparent. This actually comes in hand unlike a lot of compiz’s effects, cause I can see whats under the window. Sorry about the rant

    Hello,

I have been using kubuntu for 2 years now and love it. I would like to upgrade to 8.04 with KDE 4.0, but have not been able to find a list of video cards or any recommendations as to which cards (either older / cheaper or newer / more costly) which would work with KDE 4.0.

I have look around the web but have not found any helpful information yet. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!
