5 Reasons to use Ubuntu(updated)

So you want to get involved in the world of linux, mostly the distribution Ubuntu, but you are not sure if you should? Well here are five reasons that you should give Ubuntu a try.

  1. Its FREE! Everyone loves that price- Not only is the operating system free but the software is as well. So you can get an office suite and a photo editing program for free and is just as good as the expensive versions, though not as pretty.
  2. Low requirements, High performance- You can run Ubuntu on 512mb of RAM and it will feel like you are using a gig on Windows Vista. The OS requires barely any specs to run but it is still powerful. Of course if you want the Compiz features and all of the cool things you will need at least a gig of ram for a smooth experience.
  3. Breath new life!- Got an old computer? As I mentioned above it doesn’t require any new hardware to run the operating system and software. This is perfect for giving a computer to a first time user weather its a child or your parent.
  4. Perfect for the student- You have a laptop for class why not go with Ubuntu? Like me, if you are in college you are always low on funds and you would probably like to buy food for the week instead of Microsoft Office and Adobe PhotoShop. Once again the free software comes into play here
  5. Your in control- With Ubuntu you have 100% control of how you want the interface to look like. Everything is basically customizable. So if you are a Windows converter you can make Ubuntu look like XP or Vista so you will still feel at home

Why do you use Ubuntu over other operating systems? I want to know why do you use it? Let the community know via a comment.

Not disputing what you say, but how can you assert that Ubuntu uses less battery power? Are you assuming fewer processes being run? If you are that assumption is really not safe in all cases.

Power Management support was horrible for me in Ubuntu 7.10

The system would always stand-by but never wake up.

Desktop effects also caused random lockups even with the open source ATI driver versus the Restricted (non-free) one.

Linux is maturing but its just not quite there yet… for everyone I mean.

Its getting close though…

PC SPECS If you’re curious after I named problems…

AMD Turion64 x2 1.8GHZ
2GB RAM
ATI Xpress 1150 Chipset and Graphics Adapter (Runs Aero, Halo, WoW, Halo 2, and a bunch of other games just fine) should be powerful enough for Ubuntu effects. Not sure what caused me so much trouble.

point #2 is slightly misleading. IT all depends on how stripped down the OS is. You can strip down windows to run just as well on an equal amount of memory. In fact, in windows i never used a full 2gb of memory on a regular basis.. in linux (my now primary OS) is constantly using the full 2gb of ram (just ordered another 4gb to take care of that).

point #4 is also misleading and even a complete lie according to this test:

I wouldn’t consider #5 much of a “reason to use ubuntu”.

Not to attack you personally, but it might be a good idea to put more thought into your reasons why someone should do something :)

I don’t think he mentioned battery life at all… He just said Linux is open source and free while you pay for windows or mac.
