How To Send SMS With An iPhone or iPod Touch

As you know with the iPod Touch you have full access to any web page, assuming the page doesn’t have flash :), so you can access your e-mail account as normal, but did you know you can also send SMS messages, aka text messaging, with it to? So how do you do this? Its easy and of course free to you!(You can also do this with the Mail App, assuming your iPod Touch is jailbroken)
- First you need someones full phone number, with area code like so 9125551234
- Second you need to go to your e-mail page like Gmail or Yahoo and hit compose, in the “TO:” area type in the persons phone number with the following after the number, @teleflip.com
Sample: 9125551234@teleflip.com
- Third type an e-mail like normal but keep it as simple as possible, remember they are reading this on their phone they don’t care to read a book!
- Then hit send! That simple!
When you send the e-mail Teleflip automatically converts the e-mail to a SMS and sends it to the phone, remember that person is charged their normal texting rates. One warning though if you send this with Yahoo it sends a weird code as the mail sender, so please sign your message so the person reading the SMS will know it is. On the other hand I do not have this problem with Gmail as it displayed my e-mail name.So you can text back and forth with no cost to you and its as simple as sending an e-mail!If you know of a better way or have any tips please leave them as a comment.

Not sure, I believe the service is only for numbers within the United States.

An easier(?) way if you have an AIM account:
1. Go to www.meebo.com on your iPod Touch/iPhone
2. Sign into your AIM account
3. In the screenname space type +1 then the phone number (For example if the phone number was 123-456-7890 then it would be +11234567890).
4. It will be sent as a free text message (for you) and as long as the receiver replies to the original text then you will get replies for free.
That’s it.

Please note, this isn’t useful useful if you are the 95.3% of the world GSM phone owners who live outside the US. GSM wasn’t invented in the US, either.
Thanks though, useful for sending texts to American friends, that’s something.

I agree with brian it is a lot easier to use aim. Some of the best websites to use are meebo.com or also beejive.com and sign into your aim account and add the buddies phone number like ex. +14159890786 thus is the easiest way to send SMS messages

I can’t receive texts back to my Touch (they got to my mobile) but I can send them. I built this app today - click here. It uses the Sipgate (VoIP) API.
