A quick way to answer this question would be by saying yes and no.

You can hook up an HD DVD player on a normal standard definition TV, SDTV, and be able to watch your HD movies without any problem but of course they will not be in HD but they will be at DVD quality. I find this great if something happens to your HD-TV you will still be able to use your new collection on just about any TV. I was able to do this with my Xbox 360 HD DVD player but I am about 90% this will work for all other players.

So why would someone want to do this? Well for starters I noticed that the sound was crisper on my 5.1 surrounded sound system then ever before. Also for you penny savers you can go ahead and buy a good HD DVD player from Wal-Mart of only $99, which is around the normal asking price for any decent DVD player.
