Gibbons, Leopards, And Ballmers, Oh, My! Choosing Between The Big 3 OSes

  • No Related Post

In the coming weeks the world will be able to choose between three respectable operating systems that have a lot of hype and followers. One side you have the Microsoft fanboys telling people to wait for SP1, the other you have the Apple Cult getting their lawn chairs, Mountain Dews, and iPhones ready to wait in line for the Leopard release next Friday, and way in the corner shoved away you have the Linux enthusiasts getting their favorite Torrent programs ready for the final build of Ubuntu 7.10, and I feel caught in the middle of all this!

First off I own a Dell laptop and a iMac, one with Vista and one with OS X Tiger (you guess which one). I love the Mac to death and am a big fan of Tiger, and there is no doubt that I will upgrade to Leopard within a year, maybe less, so as I count my change to get Leopard I have a bid decision to make for my laptop.

Compared to the iMac the laptop is a different story, I mean I have to use my laptop for school and so forth. Recently I went against my gut and then I upgraded to Vista and started to like it, key words started to like it, recently Vista started to give me headaches. For some it boots up sometimes, sometimes I get BSOD, sometimes I get Windows Explorer crashes, its kind of like a bad movie with no good ending in sight. So here is the million dollar question,

Should I wait for SP1 on Vista or install Ubuntu 7.10?

Now I have tried both and have had my problems. For starters I have already stated my Vista headaches plus my printer, scanner, and microphone all go crazy with Vista as well. With Ubuntu I could never get my wireless card to work, its a Dell Wireless 1390 I have tried every solution no help!, this is a big thing for me seeing as I only use the wireless card on the laptop. I do prefer Ubuntu a little more because of all the wonderful software and ease of use but sometimes trying to fix a problem goes over my head, and yes I am a geek. Also I would love to make the full transition to Ubuntu in the future but I would still like to access certain things through the Windows world for school and of course my beloved Zune, does Wubi work in Vista?. All in all I think I might have to live in both worlds for now.

So my pick for which new OS I will be using? All three!!

Which one will you use? Also if you could help me with my Ubuntu problems that would be great!

I’m planning to dual-boot Vista and Mister Gutsy. I’ve never been a really big Mac fan and I never will be. I’ve also had problems with Vista, but I’ve learned to ignore a lot of it. I find Beryl a whole lot better then the Aero Interface, but due to being a gamer, I still need to use Windows to run a lot of my favorite games.

I’m going to suggest that you try Dual-Booting Vista with Ubuntu. Better yet; install an VM that runs Linux. I find that running a VM is a lot easier then constantly having to restart my computer, but you might not feel the same way. Oh, and Wubi is supported by Vista, so you could also stick to that if you want.

Ask if you want any guides on Dual-Booting or VM’s.

I’m sorry I can’t really help you with your Ubuntu problems…

Thnx, I am downloading Wubi and version 7.04 right now and I will upgrade to 7.10 upon the installation.
