Card Reader…BINGO

As mentioned in one of my previous posts I have been on the hunt for a Smart Media Card Reader that will function with Vista. Many well known companies such as Lexar give a ton of information but nowhere does it say for Vista. I’ve got way to many things on my plate to get on the phone and check with the manufacturers so I am much more inclined to purchase the product if the information I need is spelled out on their website. After rummaging, searching and checking with friends I may have found what I need.
Athena, Smart Card Solutions appears to have what I have been looking for. The reader is called the ASE Drive IIIe USB V2 Smart Card Reader. It states in the specs that it has the “Working With Vista” logo for Windows Vista and Windows Vista 4-bit. The Smart Card Reader firmware is flash upgradeable for future unlimited upgrades and the cost when purchasing from 1 to 9 units is $36 each. The cost drops as you purchase in bulk so my assumption is that this firm caters to large businesses. That unit price is pretty much in line with the average cost of these readers and it reads more than just the Smart Media Card.
I have not run across this company in the past but it appears that they specialize in this type of product. I hope that other companies begin to make it clear on their websites that their products “work With Vista”.

The SmartMedia card reader that I have found to work with Vista (home premium - on a gateway laptop) is my trusty Zio USB reader. The reader hotlinks nicely with the new laptop and my old Win98 - which is the true benefit because of the lack of USB flash drive support on Win98.
Since finding that the Smart card could be used to transfer many files and not just pics from a digital camera I can get around the wait time of burning files to disk and transferring between computers. Just plug in the Zio reader in the USB port and you’re ready to drag and drop.
I know what you mean about companies getting their act together…on the packaging of a USB flash reader purchased from Gateway - to perform the file transfers that I now use the Zio for - it was stated to contact gateway support for the drivers necessary for the USB flash drive to work with Windows98. Upon doing so I was told that they had no drivers for Win98. Of course I threw away the packaging so the item was unreturnable and now quite useless to me. Glad I did not purchase a more expensive model.
Anyway, guess I won’t need to fiddle around with those “generic” drivers I located for the USB flash drive since I can use the Zio for all my file transfers!
Good luck!
