The Futures of Hollywood — Which is the Most Likely?

Over the years Hollywood has given its audience lots to think about in regards to the future of humanity.  As participants of the human race (and I assume you all are) it is up to us to decide which future prediction will be the most accurate.

Your choices are as follows.

Blade Runner

Blade Runner

One of the most obvious choices, yes. In this future we have humans living in a smog-ridden, yet coldly beautiful dystopia. The cars are flying, and the buildings are massive and yet all of the inhabitants of this world seem… lonely? I mean, of course the Replicants are sad (four-year life spans will do that) but even the humans just seem to be merely drifting along — no rhyme; no reason. Overall, the basic government infrastructure seems to be roughly the same, only more… odd.

Terminator

Terminator

Another obvious. Here we have humanity damn near ex-terminated (had to do it). For those who aren’t familiar with this future, I’ll catch you up to speed: Humans finally did it! We invented Artificial Intelligence software. Whew, now that that’s done let’s go ahead and put it in charge of all our weapons and defense systems and let it run, I d’know… everything! What’s that? It’s self-awhat? I’m not following– KABOOM! In a single day most of humanity is wiped off the face of the Earth in a nuclear holocaust because our child, AI, is having an identity crisis. And for good measure it went ahead and launched our new combat weapons to kill the rest of us (and we just HAD to spend that extra cash on those shiny new tanks, H-Ks, and those spiffy T-100s to boot). The good news, though, is that we won. In the year 2029, the Human Resistance eventually does emerge triumphant over the machines. Clean up is gonna be a bitch.

Goobacks

South Park’s “Goobacks”

Here’s a bit of a curveball — and yet strangely possible. In the future, all of the different races of humans will mix and match in the hibbity jibbity so much that eventually there will only be one single race! Oh, and all of our different languages will integrate as well. Said hibbity jibbity, however, will also be the cause of Earth’s massive overcrowding and in the end… there won’t be enough jerbs! Sadly, this one is probably my pic for the most likely…

V for Vendetta

V for Vendetta

In this future, humanity actually takes a few steps back. Basically: “Remember Hitler? People really supported that guy back in the day! Given our current state of chaos who’s to say he was actually wrong… right? Our society needs to be stabilized, so whats say we get rid of anyone who isn’t white, straight, or has a sense of humor — for the greater good!” In this totalitarian society, there is a single Leader and he controls the main four or five branches below him who, in turn, control everybody else. Everyone will believe what he believes, act how he acts, eat what he eats, and watch whatever he watches on the teley. And in return? Well, you get to live of course. Oh, you’re welcome!

Firefly/Serenity

Firefly/Serenity

Here’s an interesting one. In the future, the world’s largest superpowers (the United States and China) will join forces and form The Alliance. They’ll the build the most brilliant “civilized” worlds in their solar system. Sadly, though, no matter how big they may be and/or get, they can’t have a hand in everything, and they can only watch over so much. So when people on the outer planets are neglected, they choose not to succumb to Alliance rule. The result: a massive war between the Alliance and the Independents… the Independents (or forever “Browncoats”) lose. The consequences: Well, nothing really. Things mostly go back to normal — the Alliance is still unable to extend their reach to outer planets, and until they do, well, people’ll just keep on flyin’. (Personally, this one would be my most preferable future — if only because in this ‘Verse there’s the possibility of a one River Tam!)

Children of Men

Children of Men

Possibly in the same vein as V for Vendetta or Blade Runner. Here we’re in a dystopia on the brink of chaos. A war’s a brewin’. Why? Simple: No children, No Future, No Hope. That’s right, women have stopped having babies (not intentionally, of course) and as a result, no one could give a flying piss anymore. Oh, and the government also has locked away all illegal immigrants on the streets. What caused this? We’re not very sure. There was a flu pandemic that killed a bunch of people (including lots of children) and shortly after that is when the babies stopped coming altogether… so I suppose that has something to do with it. The end result is obviously quite depressing.

Wall-E

WALL-E

And here we have our final Hollywood future. The world’s gone to hell thanks to consumer overspending and MASSIVE waste creation. When toxicity levels rise, Buy-N-Large (i.e., the government) decides it’s best if everyone left the planet for a few years and allowed little WALL-E units to clean up while they’re away. Humans will live in enormous spaceships where, of course, they only get lazier and come to resemble baby-like blobs floating around in their convenient hover chairs. And of course when five years turns into seven-hundred, well, no one really cares. As it turned out, the clean up idea didn’t go so well and earth is pretty well completely abandoned — except for the one last adorable robot that someone forgot to turn off.

Now go ahead, pick thy poison!

Aww, but what about Logan’s Run? Planet of the Apes? Soylent Green? Idiocracy? 1984? THX-1138? Star Trek? Alien? A Boy and His Dog? Gattaca? Er…

Yeah, I know. You have to stop somewhere or the list would be way too unwieldy. I love to think about possible futures, too — can you tell? :)

My picks as most likely from yours listed, though? Hmm….probably somewhere between Blade Runner and Children of Men. And the fearmongering fascism we see in V for Vendetta is something we’ve seen before and we’ll see again, for sure. That’s cyclical, though. It never lasts.

But really, wouldn’t it be nice if we could have a Star Trek type of future? Out of all of the above (mentioned by either of us), it’s about the only non-dystopian future we really get to glimpse.

Yeah, I kinda did just make a list out of my personal favs. I considered The Matrix as well but I figured Terminator kinda covered that one for the most part.

I do, however, wish that I’d have thought to add Idiocracy!

What Do You Think?
