Back on XP

Much like someone else, I’m back on XP. Vista completely blew up on me last week, and it was the latest frustration in a string of problems I’ve had. I was using my laptop fine at home one morning, and when I packed up to go to work, I actually shut down rather than hibernated (which is what I usually do). When I started up after getting to work, I had a black background and all my applications treated themselves as new installs. Something was seriously wrong with my AppData folder. Between that, the “open dialog” problem, and a few other issues I had, I’ve decided to go back to XP as my primary OS for a while. I have my system set up to dual boot the two operating systems, but after five months of using Vista I’m ready to not have to figure out so many things to use my computer the same ways I always have.
In doing all this I also started using Second Copy. I’ve been looking for something easy and out of the way to keep my VP’s laptop in sync with our server. His primary PC is a laptop, and he docks it when he’s in the office. He complained when I had XP’s offline folders setup. It doesn’t work as well as I’d like it to. Vista’s got better offline support, but I don’t plan on going there for a while. Second Copy does the job nicely. I’ve got it setup on my laptop to sync my local documents folder with one on our file server every two hours. I’ve also set up our VPN connection so it’ll dial that before syncing and hang up when it’s done, so it works regardless of where I am. It’s stayed out of the way and I think it’ll give me peace of mind once I get it installed on the VP’s laptop.

I’m with you Chris,
New HP Laptop. Can’t return to my trusted XP Pro since HP doesn’t have any drivers for XP. New hardware from the ground up. I could go on and on about all the bugs in Vista. One annoying thing is it takes close to 2-3 minutes to boot up. The main one though is….I installed a program one day, didn’t function properly from the get-go, so I uninstalled it. And the next day that I boot up, guess what? It’s baaaack. What gives??? It’s going back to Best Buy.

Second Copy is a nice syncing program but when Daylight Savings Time changes modes, Second Copy will think all files have changed.

Doesn’t M$ have an OS downgrade policy so you can switch to a lesser version if you have problems like this?
If so, how would you do it? I have had many problems with lack of driver support for Win XP x64bit.

I have no intention of buying a new pc, or an upgrade version, of Vista. After so many years with XP Home I have become comfortable with my abilities to fix the os when it screws up, which is constant. I have no desire to spend money to become a tech spec on another os by Bill and M$.

I bought a new Toshiba with Vista, and it has never crashed. It has worked easier with the net, and I think faster? It doesn’t work with my Fujitsu scansnap though……I hate that. Scansnap is integral to my practice and there is no way for me to have a paperless office without it. Sooo even though I like Vista, I can’t use it.

Most new laptops support XP. There’s no hardware that’s Vista-only at the moment, I’d check with HP’s support site and see if they offer XP drivers for your system. I’d bet that they do.

I am an XP user but I will refuse to upgrade to Vista. Word coming from my co-workers is that it is a resource hog that barely works with the current generation of PCs. I want to extend the lifecycle of my current PC (P4-2.2 GHz, 80GB HD, 768MB RAM) for a few more years so I’ve decided to take the plunge and become a Linux user.

I use both Win2kPro and XP and I’m happy with both. Most of the time I wait a year or so to upgrade to the newest OS, but this time I think I’ll pass on Vista. I’d rather stay with Win2KPro and XP or maybe even ual boot XP/Ubuntu which I’m kinda getting the feel for it now with Ubuntu LiveCD. And it’s FREE
