Those that know me know I am not a religious person. As a matter of fact, I’m an atheist and quite proud of it. That being said, I do take the time to celebrate Christmas. But, I do so in a strictly familial (and commercial) sense. I get together with my five siblings and their families for a nice holiday meal and, of course, gifts. There is no Christianity to be had with my Christmas. It’s always a great time. But I find that today, December 21st, is my favorite day of the year.

Yes, the day of Yule is my favorite holiday. I don’t celebrate Yule with a log or anything like that. In fact, I hold to none of the Pagan rituals or traditions. For me, even though winter has just begun today (and we’ve had snow on the ground here for about three weeks already), today is a special day. The shortest daylight of the year. From here, the days begin getting longer, spring and it’s warmer days inch ever so closer, and the college semester comes to a close. It’s truly a wonderful day to celebrate.

So, Happy December 21st! I, for one, am very glad it’s here.

The state of Wisconsin, my home which I do love dearly (despite the cold and snow) has some of the highest gasoline and road taxes in the union. To our credit, we do have very good roads to show for it. But, I can’t say I’ve ever had a good experience at the Department of Motor Vehicles. That’s not to say that anyone ever has. But at least when I first got my license only ten years ago I knew what I was in for.

Not today. My recent experiences at the DMV has been the same long lines as before, the same grumpy state employees that treat me as if I’m a peasant as before, and the same ridiculous paperwork as before (i.e. the License Renewal form that asks if you’ve ever had a license in Wisconsin before… well, if I didn’t, would I really be filling out a RENEWAL form?).

But to add to the less-than pleasurable experiences of the past, my two most recent visits also involved getting to the window and finding out that I can’t renew my license because the computer system that runs the driver licensing program is down. And not just at this particular DMV, but at ALL of them. Both of the past two trips I’ve made (approximately three weeks separated) have I run into this problem.

It’s a good thing those high road/gasoline taxes are being put to good use.

So, this ends up being my new blog space after having tried — and hated — others. We’ll see how things work here. It seems an appropriate time for the switch, what with having just decided to change majors from Psychology to Computer Science. Just seems that a place like this one may feel a bit more like home.

Speaking of switching, it has finally become time for me to say goodbye to Microsoft Windows. I’ve loathed the entire experience (and I haven’t even had the nightmares of Vista that many others have), but I lacked the time/motivation to use Linux and lacked the money to buy a Macintosh.

BUT… this Gateway laptop just ain’t cutting it anymore. Not that it ever has (WORST money I’ve ever spent on a computer). With the new year will come a new laptop and, for me, a new platform. Having read the reviews (good and bad), the conclusion has been made. This year’s Christmas present to myself… MacBook Pro.

Yep… it’s time for making the switch, in more ways than one.

VMware and Parallels for Virtual Machines

It doesn't matter if you're running on Windows or Mac OS X - every power user needs either Parallels or VMware (or both). There's never been an easier way to test software without destroying your primary operating system's stability. Think of how many times you wish you could press a 'reverse' button on your computer. Plus, there's no easier way to try new Linux distributions - see what all the fuss is about. Run Windows in OS X, run Linux in Windows, but the best way to do either is with VMware and/or Parallels.
