What is Going to Happen to Thunderbird?

I don’t know how many of you actually go to Slashdot.org. The majority of my time reading about technology is spent reading Engadget and Gizmodo because their authors do a relatively good job of “spreading their wings.” I say relatively because it seems like a lot of their time recently as been spent talking about the iPhone. Which I have nothing against because it is one of the greatest pieces of technology that is currently out on the market.

Anyway, last Monday a co-worker of mine referred me to a Slashdot articled that was titled “Thunderbird in Crisis?” I originally thought that the article was related to some major security that were discovered and how everyone should stop using Thunderbird. Everyone take 2 minutes and read this article. It will open in a new window/tab so don’t worry about losing your place in article.

In my opinion, if production of Thunderbird were to stop, I don’t know what I would do. I love Thunderbird because it does a great job of managing IMAP e-mail accounts and does a decent job as an RSS reader. The majority of the clients that I support for my job have Thunderbird installed and are using it for their e-mails accounts; regardless of the type of account (i.e. POP or IMAP). On a mass support level like I to do, Thunderbird is very easy to support. Any ideas for another great e-mail application?

Not sure where Thunderbird is going production-wise , but a very MAJOR Company is changing their email client to ThunderBird starting 10/21/07. “The World on Time”…..

I’m either missing something or I’m a complete idiot. What company is going to be switching to Thunderbird as their main e-mail client?

What Do You Think?
