Insurance not the right route for our flood damage

If you follow me on twitter, then you have seen me tweet a couple of times about a little flood we had the other night. Last night while eating supper I was looking out my front window into our park (we live on a circle with a large green space in the center) and I noticed my neighbour kicking the soccer ball around with his kids. Light bulb went off! He used to be an insurance adjuster. I ran outside and asked him if he minded me asking him a few insurance questions. It turns out that given the amount of water we had, and that we have a $500 deductible, it really isn’t worth the insurance claim.

So yesterday evening I spent clearing my furniture out of the basement (with his help - awesome guy!). It happens to be our media room or family room with the home theater. So everything that wasn’t tied down came out. Couches, chairs, speakers and tables. Everything except the wall unit holding the TV, MCE machine and audio system were removed. Now my newly cleaned office with my nice new work bench is not even accessible. :(

Then I rented a carpet cleaner and cleaned the entire room. Even though it’s a hard pill to swallow, it is a blessing in disguise I suppose; as they were due for a cleaning. The water coming out of that cleaner was awful!

So it needs about 48 hours to dry. It’s a shame that it’s not a lot warmer out as the heat pump would help to take some of the humidity out of the air. Since the flood our humidity in the house has been around 70%. It makes the drying process quite long.

Wish us luck :)
