Almost everyone I know has downloaded an emulator or ROM (read-only memory) at least once. If you don’t know what emulators are, they are programs that act as a game system of some kind: NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, etc. ROMs are the games.

I’m not 100% positive on this but I believe it is actually legal to download them if you have actually owned the game before. On the other hand, what if you have never owned the game before, or even the system? What is the difference in you buying it from someone on eBay and downloading it if they no longer make the game? You aren’t giving the company that made the game the money for it. You are giving it to some random person.

For games that are currently available in stores, though, I think that is wrong. You are stealing from the company then. What are your thoughts on emulators and ROMs?

I’ve always hated having to search around my computer for something. It is so much easier just to use shortcut keys on your keyboard. Personally I find myself using Run a lot to open things. I found an application that allows you to search for files, open applications, and open up Web sites all from this very small and good-looking program. This program is called Launchy.

Launchy indexes the all of the programs in your start menu so that you can launch them from basically just a few keystrokes. You can open bookmarks and folders as well. I find that it is a very helpful program if you don’t want to spend too much time searching for your stuff.

To search for something on Launchy you open up the program and it will have a search box. You type anything you want into the search box and Launchy will find it for you. It’s as easy as that. If you have multiple things with similar names it will open up a drop down menu for you.

If you haven’t tried it you should go to launchy.net and download it.

Don’t you hate sitting at home and trying to find a good radio station to listen too? Well look no further. Musicovery is a website that lets you choose your music virtually any way possible.

At Musicovery you have a wide variety of options on how to pick what you want to play. You can choose by style of music, that pretty much is self explanatory. Another way you can pick your music is by the mood you are in. If you’re in a good mood you can choose to make your music more positive. If you’re in a bad mood you can make it more dark.

Another great feature about Musicovery is that you have the ability to play music that is either energetic or calm. It’s great because whatever mood you are in you can find music that fits you.

The Hismar who was funded by the European Commission, can attach to a ship magnetically. It pressure washes the hull with the surrounding sea water and it sucks up debris and growths into a filter system that can process a huge amount of water, 150 liters of water per minute. The ship doesn’t have to be in dry dock to work either. The robot can work above and below the waterline while the ship is afloat.

Hismar offers an alternative to coating a hull in chemically treated paint to prevent marine growth. Since they now have a robot to do it, that can help keep chemicals out of the water. Another good reason for using Hismar is that if there is nothing on the hull of the ship that will reduce drag, which will also cut down on fuel prices. The robot would also keep ships coming from far away from bringing non indigenous species and ocean contaminates from one region to another.

Last week there was a deadly train collision outside of the Los Angeles area. The conductor had been text-messaging while on the job.

There was an emergency order that was passed on Thursday by the California Public Utilities Commission, or CPUC. The CPUC noted the lack of federal or state rules regarding the use of such devices by on duty train personnel. The president of the commission said in a statement that the prohibition on cell phone use was while conducting was “necessary and reasonable.”

The order came after an announcement on Wednesday that the investigators had determined from phone records that the engineer had sent and received text messages while in control of the Metrolink commuter train that collided with a huge Union Pacific freight train on Sept. 12.

The commuter train had been carrying somewhere around 225 passengers, had ran a red light northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Twenty five people were killed in the incident and more than 130 people were injured in the worst domestic train accident since 1993.

VoIP services have already put a lot of pressure on landline services. Now, VoIP is putting the pressure on mobile carriers as well. More and more mobile devices like Apple’s “iPhone” are able to use software and networks a mobile VoIP client needs to operate. However, mobile carriers have set a few ground rules as to what is allowed. One example is that AT&T forbids the iPhone to run VoIP over its cellular network. Doing this limits its use to Wi-Fi.

Wireless VoIP services vary widely in how they work. Some services, including “Jajah”, can be used with basic cell phones and it is required that users call a local number that will then connects them to the service that then routes a phone call overseas or anywhere in the world. Others are more involved, requiring that the user must download software onto a cell phone that has internet connectivity.

In some cases, calls must be placed through a Wi-Fi network connection. What all of the services have in common is that each one helps the wireless users circumvent at least some of the charges associated with long-distance wireless calls.

I hope all phone will eventually allow you to use VoIP.

Over the years I’ve used many different types of anti-virus software — everything from free up to $300 (outrageous, I know). I have to say both have worked about the same.

The best free anti-virus software that I have seen is called AVG (Free Edition). AVG also has a version that you can purchase, but I really don’t notice any big differences between the two other than the theme. I have used a lot of other free anti-virus products, but this one I would have to say is the best that I have found. I use this on my own personal computer.

Moving on from the free software is obviously the software you have to buy. The one I hear the most about is Norton Anti-Virus. Most people know of or use Norton because it usually comes as a trial version on most new laptops and desktops.

Norton is a pretty good. The only problems I have had is that it is VERY slow and takes up a lot of CPU usage. I read an article once where someone stated that since Norton is one of the most popular anti-virus programs out there it is more likely to miss a virus because they know what it specifically looks for. I’m not stating this is true, it’s just something I read that was kind of interesting. I have experienced something similar a while back. Something was really wrong with my PC and I couldn’t figure out why. I scanned with Norton and it found nothing, and then a friend recommended AVG (Free Edition). I scanned with AVG and found several problems and fixed it.

All in all I would recommend AVG over Norton any day. What are your thoughts? What anti-virus software would you recommend?

Have you ever needed to connect to your computer from somewhere else. Maybe forgot that important file you needed for work. I’ve had a lot of people tell me about a website called www.logmein.com and I decided to check it out and see what all of the buzz was about.

LogMeIn (Originally known as 3AM Labs) is a remote desktop utility similar to Windows, Remote Desktop Connection.

I decided to install it on a computer of mine and try to connect to it at the local library. Once you log into your account on their website you have the option of using LogMeIn Free, Pro, or IT Reach. I chose free because it has basically everything you need. After you select what type you want you download and install the software on your computer and that’s it. When it is installed you just log into your account on their website from wherever you are and you can connect.

From my experiences with LogMeIn and Windows RDC I have come to the conclusion that LogMeIn is about twice as fast. With LogMeIn you can change the quality of how your desktop appears so that it will be faster. The program gives you the ability to send messages with the person who may be sitting at your computer to inform them that you need to use it, etc. Another pretty neat feature of LogMeIn is that you can make the computer screen of the computer you are connecting to appear black so that if anyone is sitting at it, they will not see what you are doing. You can also lock the keyboard.

After all I would recommend LogMeIn to anyone over RDC. I mean comeon, it’s free!

VMware and Parallels for Virtual Machines

It doesn't matter if you're running on Windows or Mac OS X - every power user needs either Parallels or VMware (or both). There's never been an easier way to test software without destroying your primary operating system's stability. Think of how many times you wish you could press a 'reverse' button on your computer. Plus, there's no easier way to try new Linux distributions - see what all the fuss is about. Run Windows in OS X, run Linux in Windows, but the best way to do either is with VMware and/or Parallels.
