This is an iPod hack I found for the iPod Nano Generation 1. I have been using this hack for some time now, since about June of 2007. It is extremely handy in that you can turn down the brightness of your iPod so that you can double your remaining battery life.
First thing you need to do is make sure that you have a iPod Nano Generation 1. The gen 1 has a white or black front cover and a metal back. A newer Nano either has a full aluminum case or is small and square. With that said here is the tutorial on how to enable this.
You need to go to the website www.getipodwizard.com and download the latest version of iPod Wizard. After you have downloaded it you need to reboot your iPod into disk mode but holding center + menu to restart and when it is restarting hold play + center. They you can connected youiPod to your computer.
Now you can run iPod Wizard. When you start the program make sure at the top left it is on iPod and then press Load iPod Firmware. When the firmware load you need to select “strings” and in the Hex Go To box you need to put 31DAA4 and then Jump.
When you jump to the correct string you should see that a 3 is highlighted followed by 36 3E. You need to change those strings to EA 3F. Then press “Write”.
After the firmware rights you need to unplug your iPod and restart it. When it boots normally go to:
Setting - Main Menu - Turn Backlight On
When you go back to the Main Menu you will see the backlight menu. Now you can raise and lower the brightness on your iPod.
