Well, the only place I know of that you can get a 100% free domain name with no effort is www.dot.tk there is really nothing wrong with tk except that they have a banner running at the top of your site at all times, unless, you pay for a premium service. A few other alternatives for free domain names are ezyrewards and diskonnected. Ezyrewards is a site that pays you with points to do offers. You can put the points towards rewards which one of them is $8.50 credit towards your Optinom.com account(a domain registration website). This requires 1000 points. Most of the your points come from referrals so make sure you get referrals. I have used them several times for domains and I have had no problems at all. Another way is if you join a site I have made www.diskonnected.org. In my opinion it is easier to get a domain from there then ezyrewards. To get a domain from Diskonnected all you do is sign up, be a active poster(around 50 posts) and in the “I Want A Free Domain” topic in the General section tell why you think you should get a free domain name.
