I went out looking for reviews on the FRS Antioxidant Health Energy Drink product that Lance Armstrong is endorsing these days and I ran across this blog where the author has set out to try every energy boosting drink on the market. This guy has contributed hours of reading material on most of the drinks claiming to safely boost your energy. If you buy the stuff, it’s probably the best objective review site you’ll find.

Speaking of objective reviews, I came across that site because I am actually researching the benefits of fish oil supplements. The body building magazines seem to endorse their usage out of hand, but I’m having a hard time finding unbiased endorsement to verify the fat burning benefits claimed in so many places. Does anyone know of a good source of unbiased information on Omega 3’s and other supplements?

I’ve been trying to figure out since yesterday why Microsoft’s decision to make the Sysinternals’ body of utilities available by browsing the folder where they are stored on their website was a big deal. I went to http://live.sysinternals.com where the utilities are now available and the best it felt was clunky. No wonder reporting on this “new” availability is slim. Ed Bott mentions it here

It just dawned on me … I can make it a network place in Windows Explorer and I have a folder with all of those utilities ready to use and the latest version to boot. Here’s how …

Windows Vista

In Windows Explorer, just right click on Computer and then Add a Network Location. When the Wizard Comes up use http://live.sysinternals.com and complete. Now there is an entry under the Network node in Explorer.

Windows XP

The steps are a bit different in XP ….

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Network and Internet Connections.
2. Under See Also, click My Network Places.
3. Click Add a network place. The Add Network Place Wizard starts.
4. Click Next to continue.
5. Click Choose another network location, and then click Next.
6. In the Internet or network address box, type the name of the network share that you want to use. ( \\live.sysinternals.com\tools)
7. Click Next.
8. In the Type a name for this network place box, type the name that you want, and then click Next.
9. Click Finish.

Default security settings don’t allow the html help files to run off this folder unless you make it trusted. The choice is yours and up to you to figure out how to do it.

My next step will be to publish this via group policy so that it is available with my admin login on every machine in the place.

When I was a kid, a place that we lived had sulfur in the water. We had to cart our drinking water in from town. We were able to use the spigot that was connected to a freezer used to make and store blocks of ice for free. Since then I have considered the clean odor free water that comes out of the tap a blessing and I never really understood why bottled municipal water is such a hot seller.

Another routine my family had from this experience was drinking from our personal water bottle in the fridge. All three of us kids had “our” bottle and that’s where we went for a drink. Even after we moved we continued with the tradition because we didn’t use a fresh glass every time. I wonder if I can make this stick with my teenagers…

I have considered the possibility of writing a book about properly preparing for outdoor family events for several years. This weekend while taking a hike up Sharp Top, one of Virginia’s Peaks of Otter, I was reminded once again how badly the book is needed and the folks that bring children along are actually the ones that inspired me to write this entry. I don’t really expect the novice hiker to go out and buy all the latest gear, but there is one thing needed when doing anything outdoors - Water. Plenty of water. I see some people on every hike that I do carrying just a single 20 oz. (a bit more than .5 l) bottle of water purchased on the way to the trailhead and many times I think they are planning to share that with the children in tow.

A body can sweat off ½ to (believe it or not) 2 quarts of fluids per hour, depending on heat and exertion, and this is more pronounced when walking uphill in the sun. Since a body can absorb up to a quart (about a liter) per hour, I encourage everyone that hikes to have a quart of water for every one to two hours that they will be out, especially when out during the high sun hours. Sure it’s heavy in the beginning, but the load lightens as it’s consumed.

Children burn off calories faster, can’t take calories in as fast, and need a far higher number of sips of water than adults. I learned this on a bicycle riding event that my family attended where my daughter was making it clear that she didn’t want to be there. There was a sandwich stand halfway through this bike ride and she got off the bike and ordered a sandwich without even asking. She was content for the rest of the trip and we all had a better day. Since then, I learned to quietly monitor them to insure they are refueling properly and I don’t think we’ve had a bad time since.

VMware and Parallels for Virtual Machines

It doesn't matter if you're running on Windows or Mac OS X - every power user needs either Parallels or VMware (or both). There's never been an easier way to test software without destroying your primary operating system's stability. Think of how many times you wish you could press a 'reverse' button on your computer. Plus, there's no easier way to try new Linux distributions - see what all the fuss is about. Run Windows in OS X, run Linux in Windows, but the best way to do either is with VMware and/or Parallels.
