More on Bottled Water

Bill Webb had this to say and Forsythe has dealt with bottled water here and here previously, so I’d like to bump the attention of those posts back to the top once more. I appreciate OzTech taking a look at the subject this morning as well.

When I was a kid, a place that we lived had sulfur in the water. We had to cart our drinking water in from town. We were able to use the spigot that was connected to a freezer used to make and store blocks of ice for free. Since then I have considered the clean odor free water that comes out of the tap a blessing and I never really understood why bottled municipal water is such a hot seller.

Another routine my family had from this experience was drinking from our personal water bottle in the fridge. All three of us kids had “our” bottle and that’s where we went for a drink. Even after we moved we continued with the tradition because we didn’t use a fresh glass every time. I wonder if I can make this stick with my teenagers…

How about this for a reason: not all water that comes out of a tap in this country is clean and odor free. Just because you live in an area with good water doesn’t mean everybody in the country does. Where I live (central California) the water comes from deep artesian wells and is so loaded up with minerals it tastes awful.

I should clarify my previous content by saying that bottled municipal water is filtered, so even if it’s from the same source as the tap it still tastes better. As for why people by it bottled instead of filtering it themselves - it’s easier and sometimes not much more expensive.

I usually drink the water from the sink, or as it is called tap water. I cant taste the difference in the two, bottled or tap? I do use a water purifier, I do not like the taste and feeling of all those chemicals left and added to my water. I do not care if it makes tour teeth better, I like pure natural clear clear water. I would never waste so much money on bottled water though, this is a complete useless thing to me.

Daniel - Thanks for the comments.

I wonder if the undercounter type filters available from Lowes would help with the mineral taste you mention. It solved my iron problem and only costs about $10 every 6 months to maintain.

The only thing that doesn’t work about bottled water is the fact that it takes a lot of oil to ship bottled water around the country. As much as I like the convenience of bottled water… there is a reason it is so pricey (and bound to go up in price too).

To be honest… all food is going to have this issue soon. So I guess my point is that we need to start finding more technology that allows us to ship stuff around without paying that hefty price.

I like bottled water for it’s convenience though… not really it’s taste so much. I can buy a brita and use that for a lot longer than bottles obviously - and I don’t like the taste of water after a while from the same bottle. They even say water molds… so make sure you wash your bottles one way or another.

Well, it’s my two cents on this. :)

Kind Regards,
-Shaina
