Mail In Rebates - A Scam

I am sitting here filling out all of the paperwork, gathering receipts, and cutting out a UPC code from a box so I can receive a mail in rebate from a monitor purchase.   I am realizing what a scam this is.   Other than the fact that a large percentage of the population never turn these in, they also keep you from returning your items.   They force you to destroy the original box to get the the UPC Code you have to send in.   You can’t return something that is destroyed.   What a scam.

What are your thoughts?   Do you turn in the rebates, or refuse to do it our of laziness or anything else?

You could just buy stuff from places with out rebates, such as Office Max. No rebates at all. Tis pretty nice, and the sales are usually pretty good.
