SMTP is a horrible protocol for sending email. I prefer Exchange services but do understand that SMTP is required. All email providers that use SMTP need to make sure that they are using authentication. There are still a lot of companies that does not do this. Without authentication, spammers are having a field day bouncing messages off of others’ servers.
