AVCHD - Windows/Apple

I have been a long time fan of Windows computers, and for the most part have ignored Apple products. I am seeing more and more everyday that Microsoft does not listen to their customers, yet apple does. AVCHD is a perfect example of this. Why has Microsoft not released an update for Windows and or Windows Movie Maker that includes an AVCHD codec? Apple has done this with IMovie ‘08. I think this is what is going to push me over the edge and finaly purchase a Macbook. I will still always rely on Microsoft for my main computer, but the Macbook would be the perfect supplement. Now I have to decide if I want to wait for Leopard or not.

I was in your situation 1 week ago and purchased a Mac Pro (~$4k). Now I regret it. Macs can play AVCHD movies but cannot edit them without transcoding them to another format. I intend to call Apple about returning my new Mac tomorrow unless there is some resolution in FinalCut Express or Leopard. Do your research - there is a reason it all seems too good to be true.
Some other comments:
- The Mac UI actually looks old/tired compared to Vista (I find Vista easier to navigate due to its use of color).
- It is next to impossible to move the user folder (User Profile in Windows) to another volume and maintain a simple upgrade path - a must if you are doing lots of video work and have multiple disks in RAID arrays.

Ive been using VoltaicHD (from http://www.shedworx.com) which runs on the PC platform but also runs on Macs (Intel and PowerPC ). It works great since it converts the avchd files into suitable formats on both platforms.
