Social Networks in School

My social studies teacher has been using many of the resources of the web. Wikis, blog, social networks etc. The main one she has been using is Ning. You may of heard of it, but if you haven’t ti is really cool. It allows you to build your own network and only let people in that network to enter.

we have been using this for educational purposes. We have done many projects on this and have been well satisfied with it’s capabilities. Before I go too far I must let you know that this is also a test to see if our school system should block this site or not. Basically we are trying to show the that social networks can be used for educational purpose (for good not bad).

So far we have done a total of two major projects on this page. We have done one on our personality/culture and we have done one on different regions of the world. The culture is pretty self explanatory, but the regions of the world is complicated. What we did was we took Europe, Asia, and Africa and divided them up into some major countries to look at. We had to have certain cultural attributes for each continent. Not for each country, but for each continent. The cultural attributes are the following:

  1. History/Traditions
  2. Religion(s)
  3. Daily Life
  4. Government
  5. Economy
  6. Arts
  7. languages
  8. Social Groups

These are all the attributes we used. If you wanted to i guess you could come up with some more. So the finished product is informative and interesting. This was done for a seventh grade class and could be expanded for an older group of kids. The resources I found to be most useful were the World Fact Book, National Geographic, and my text book. Below are some screenshots of my project to give you an idea of what I did. Click on the pictures to get them to display larger.
