Software Firewalls Are Not The End-All, Be-All

  • No Related Post

Recently, A Canadian Geek pointed out that Microsoft Vista’s firewall did little to firewall outbound traffic.  This is no surprise to me because software firewalls have one flaw; they allow the user to make the decision on what flows in and out.  Hardware based, external firewalls are going to allow you to configure them but will have a lot less user interaction making them more suitable for blocking outbound traffic.  Simply closing a port on a hardware firewall makes any software attempting to use that port worthless (to include spyware and adware).

A two pronged approach to your network security is almost mandatory in these days of wireless networking.  Having a hardware firewall is a must but so is having a reliable and properly configured software firewall.
